Spatial Planning for Sport

Sport England has launched a new one-stop-shop website for town planners and local authorities. Entec has been working with Sport England since 2003 and advised on the establishment and content of the website pages, which are dedicated to making the best use of the spatial planning system to enhance opportunities for sport and recreation.

The website includes guidance on regional planning, engaging with community interests and partnership working. These are intended to communicate the relationship between sport and spatial planning to both planners and non-planners, along with identifying opportunities for promoting interests of sport and active recreation through policy development and implementation.

Sports Minister, Richard Caborn welcomed the new website and said: “I hope this virtual database of information will prove very useful for town planners across the country. The idea behind it was to give local authorities the tools to ensure they put sports provision at the heart of what they do, and give them the information they need to do that in one place. Where planning policies have incorporated sport development, we have seen some tremendous sports facilities built, which benefit the whole community and leave a legacy for generations of young people who want to participate.”

Entec has helped Sport England to develop a tailored response to a changing policy environment, both internally and externally. The result is a series of practical documents, capable of being updated and communicated to a wide audience using the full potential of the web.
