Entec Appointed to Upgrade Bowburn STW
Northumbrian Water Limited (NWL) has appointed Entec to deliver a range of consultancy services for a major upgrade to an existing Sewage Treatment Works in Bowburn, County Durham. The project is included in the current AMP4 programme of work.
The existing works, which serves the villages of Bowburn and Coxhoe, was originally built in 1964 and partially upgraded in 2002. Due to increased growth in the catchment and further predicted commercial and residential development, the Environment Agency plans to impose a more stringent discharge consent on the works in future. NWL has decided to enhance and extend the existing works to meet the future new consent and to accommodate further growth, including a commercial development which is being considered fairly close to the works boundary.
As framework consultants Entec has been involved in the development of the project since its launch in 2006. Following on from the completion of feasibility and preferred option development, Entec is currently engaged in the detailed design and preparation of tender documentation. The design includes a significant extension to the works and the replacement of many of the existing assets which do not have the capacity to meet the anticipated demand.
In addition to the engineering aspects of the project, Entec has also secured planning permission on behalf of NWL for the preferred scheme and appraised the potential impact of the project on the environment.
The enhanced works, once completed, will enable NWL to provide tertiary sewage treatment for a population equivalent of approximately 13,000, maintain compliance with a new discharge standard and accommodate anticipated changes in the catchment.
Entec aims to issue tenders for the construction work in Spring 2010, with construction anticipated to commence in late 2010 and the enhanced works fully operational by the middle of 2012.
Entec’s project director, Brian Crow, said “This is yet another example of the type of complex projects that our multi-disciplined teams take in their stride and is a major investment project for NWL which will facilitate growth in the region.”
