Regional and Local Government
The regional and local components of government continue to change on a regular basis.
At regional level, the Regional Development Agencies act as strategic drivers of economic development in their areas. Their aim is to co-ordinate regional economic development and economic regeneration, thereby enabling their regions to improve their relative competitiveness and to reduce the imbalance that exists within and between regions. They are major influencers and frequently act as funding conduits for regeneration initiatives.
Local authorities continue to reorganise, responding to evolving levels of service provision as statutory responsibilities develop and change.
At sub-regional level, there is a variety of Special Delivery Vehicles (SDVs). These comprise combinations of regional and local government organisations including Urban Regeneration Companies (URCs), Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) and Development Corporations (DCs). They cross local authority boundaries and seek to address all aspects of community strategy in line with government’s cross-cutting agenda.
