The activities of the defence sector involve considerable interaction with its environment. Entec's aim is to provide specialist technical and professional advice and support to defence clients on environmental and engineering matters.

Since 1994, through a term commission, Entec has provided consultancy services to Defence Estates in the technical fields of town and country planning, master planning, landscape architecture, environmental assessment (EIA, SA and SEA), highway engineering, infrastructure engineering, programme planning, cost estimates and chartered surveying.

The range of work and tasks undertaken have included:

• Integrated land management plans
• Strategic development plans
• Land-use policy and 'best practice' guidance
• One-off studies on particular issues, such as a strategic review of UK sports and leisure facilities and the higher level environmental assessment of the effects of the Strategic Defence Review on the built estate
• Individual environmental assessments on behalf of the MoD
• Establishment development plans
• Technical Advisors to Defence Estates Integrated Project Teams on major estates procurement contracts.

Projects have been undertaken at a range of MoD establishments in the United Kingdom and overseas, including Army garrisons, RAF stations, naval bases and headquarter sites.

In addition, Entec has assisted Defence Estates in the preparation of a series of technical bulletins, intended to provide guidance and background information on town planning legislation and planning issues to property managers, and all those involved in management of the MoD Estate. In order to provide readily accessible advice, Entec prepared these in a format suitable for publishing on Defence Estates' intranet site, meaning that they can be readily updated to reflect changes, and thus allow Defence Estates to continue to reflect current good practice and legislation.

Entec is also working on a number of projects with the private sector to implement development proposals under the Defence Estate's Prime Contract Initiative bringing us closer to the defence supply chain.
